Repeat Booking Gilead Sciences have built up a great working relationship with Gable Events. The company are regular entrants into our Cambridge Dragon Boat Festival which raises funds for Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust and they love dragon boating so much that they booked their own private corporate team building event with Gable Events at the Plough in Fen Ditton, Cambridge followed by a pub lunch. The Brief For their latest away day Gilead Sciences wanted a Corporate Murder Mystery in Cambridge for approximately 30 staff to include a lunch over a four-hour period. Gable Events proposed Madingley Hall, which is part of the University of Cambridge, as having the ideal traditional character combined with excellent food and service. Rather than have a separate event with lunch, Gable Events suggested that a Murder Mystery between the courses would be ideal for the numbers, providing a flowing event combining both the activity and a sit-down meal. The Venue Set in magnificent gardens just four miles from the centre of Cambridge, and a mere 60 minutes from London, Madingley Hall provides a memorable setting for any conference, meeting or event, especially a corporate murder mystery. Built in the 16th century, this elegant country house has 14 well-equipped meeting rooms capable of accommodating up to 100 delegates, and tasteful en-suite accommodation, all within seven acres of spectacular gardens and grounds, designed in the 18th century by ‘Capability’ Brown. Gable Events wanted to ensure the Cambridge murder mystery was hosted in the best possible setting and selected the Hickson room. A light and spacious room with a high, decorative ceiling and an 18th century fireplace, the Hickson Room provided an atmospheric location which enhanced the experience. The Event The initial intention was for the opening scenes of the murder mystery to play out in the grounds of Madingley Hall prior to lunch with the five professional actors located outside in the beautiful rose garden, courtyard and forest. However, typical British June weather produced a last minute change of plan. Showing great flexibility, the guests were instead met by the detective in the ornate entrance hall and given news of the murder! They were informed that a body had been found and they were all suspects in the murder case. In-between the first and main courses, the actors made their way round the tables interacting with each team and answering any questions relating to the murder case. After the teams had enjoyed their delicious main course, which was selected from a diverse menu and pre-ordered for them by Gable Events, the detective entered the room to deliver the final set of clues. Many of these clues contradicted and, on occasion, added to the teams’ theories and resulted in lively discussion at the tables. After the desserts, the actors made their way back into the room for questioning from the guests in their teams allowing them to release their inner Rumpoles! Finally, the detective handed out the verdict forms for the teams to detail their conclusions of method, motive and murderer and solve Cambridge’s most intriguing murder mystery. The team who were closest to solving the case were declared the winners and given metal police badges giving them special powers of interrogation and arrest for use back at the office!
