The Brief

With considerable prior experience of Dorney Lake, Gable Events were confident that a combination of dragon boat racing and a corporate raft building team event would keep all of the delegates engaged whilst delivering some valuable lessons in team building such as communication, time-keeping, problem solving and delegation.

Nestled amongst scenic parkland, just outside Windsor, Dorney Lake is a world class sporting and events venue with an inspiring Olympic heritage. Owned and managed by Eton College, the magnificent lakeside meeting facilities include the Lakeview function room which accommodates up to 200 people plus a range of smaller suites. There is ample free parking and land space for marquee and activities, all located just 30 minutes from London and 20 minutes from Heathrow Airport.

The Event

Gable Events set up the activities and welcomed the delegates down from the Lakeview Room following a meeting and delicious lunch provided by Dorney Lake. The 100 delegates were split into six teams with all taking part in the corporate raft building event, before combining for the dragon boat racing.

After building their rafts, each team raced them on the water to test their stability and most importantly their buoyancy. Only a team with a clear direction and strategy would be successful. The general standard of raft building was superb with most teams navigating the course safely and staying dry. The teams that lacked the required preparation ended up getting wet which was met with cheers from the other teams!

At the halfway stage, the teams took to the water in three dragon boats taking instruction from their qualified helms. They were led through a series of drills designed to get the crew members paddling together and keeping in time, showing that better teamwork achieves faster times. The event culminated in a fiercely competitive dragon boat finale with the ‘Blueberry’ team declared the overall winners. Their maximum points for raft building and a steady effort in dragon boating was enough to give them a cumulative score higher than any other team.

The dragon boat and corporate raft building team event was a great success and enjoyed by all!
